Accessibility
Did you know?
About 1.85 million people in Ontario (that's 15.5% of the population) have a disability.
47.2% of people over the age of 65 have disabilities.

Predictions are that the number of people with disabilities will continue to grow as the population ages. Ontario needs to be more accessible to people with disabilities. It is the right thing to do. It also makes good sense economically and socially. When barriers get in the way of people with disabilities participating fully in society as a result of their disabilities, everyone loses.

In 2005, the provincial government passed the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005 (AODA). This legislation requires the development and implementation of accessibility standards for the private and public sector, with a goal of being a barrier-free Ontario for individuals with disabilities by the year 2025.

The AODA includes standards in five key areas:

1. Customer Service;
2. Built Environment;
3. Information and Communication;
4. Employment; and
5. Transportation.

The first key area:
Customer Service Standards came into force on January 1, 2008. As a provider of goods or services we have complied with all of the requirements set out under this Standard by the deadline of January 1, 2012.
